Emergency services in Australia have carried out a dramatic rescue of a man clinging to a tree over raging floodwaters in Townsville, Queensland.

Richard Childs and his friends had gone out onto the swollen Ross River in a small dinghy, which sank when it hit a tree. Childs was sucked under the water, and when he surfaced his friends had drifted away and he was on his own.

He grabbed hold of a tree branch and clung on for an hour and a-half while the alarm was raised and rescuers arrived.

Meanwhile, across northern Queensland, people are cleaning up as floodwaters recede and roads reopen.

The highest rainfall has been recorded at Paluma, north of Townsville, which has had more than a just over three foot of rain this week.
