Low taxes and lax laws have turned Indonesia into the third largest market for tobacco products in the world. Targeted by the industry's relentless marketing, Indonesians start young and die young.
"If I'd known I'd get this disease I would have quit a long time ago." Ujang has terminal lung cancer. At 45, he is the victim of a habit which is killing millions in his country. Most Indonesians don't believe that smoking is bad for their health, and the industry shamelessly cashes in on their ignorance. "Indonesia is a rogue state when it comes to tobacco control", explains David Stanford of Indonesia's Consumers Federation. Low taxes keep cigarettes cheap, while aggressive marketing portrays smoking as cool. At a rock festival, advertisements are everywhere and free cigarettes handed out to teenagers. Health campaigners denounce the usual suspects: "Philip Morris is continuing to target youth in Indonesia." And as always, the industry is unrepentant.

  • Again. Everything wrong with the planet is American's fault. People are mindless robots just waiting to be programed by American capitalists. After all, the rest of the planet isn't interested in money. I'm sure the Indonesian tobacco tycoon Robert Budi Hartono has no interest in money, & gives all his earning to the poor? I am waiting for the day people star blaming tsunamis & volcanic eruptions on America. Take responsibility for your own actions!!! Smoke or don't. Don't blame the USA.

  • Phillip Morris et al., has to be the biggest mass murderers in the world today? They load their products with toxic chemicals like formaldehyde.

  • its funny how tobacco giants have such obvious disregard towards youre life, yet smokers just take it up the ass!

  • They need to smoke weed in indo . Better for your lungs .

  • Can any Americans tell me how they won their battle against corporate tobacco? I know that the situation Indonesia is in with regards to tobacco is something America had gone through decades ago. An explanation will be greatly appreciated as it will help me to understand what might be necessary to end tobacco's reign in Indonesia.

  • they used to do the same thing 25 yrs ago on Hollywood blvd. Companies like PM should be shutdown..f..ing scumbags.

  • This is the 10th this video has show up on my subscription channel. And then they force you to watch 10 to 20 seconds of adverts, otherwise it will stay on your subscription channel

  • Of course we can. It's not like the rest of the world uses money. Outside the USA, it's a Utopia. And god knows, nobody outside the USA is greedy, and nobody in the world, blinded by the dollar signs in their eyes, invested in subprime loans with the intention of making a fast buck, when they knew it was unsafe. That's why I just say, blame the USA for everything. This way, nobody has to face reality or take responsibility for their actions. USA is the big scapegoat. Nice & easy that way.

  • well we can blame the current world economic turmoil on the USA.

  • @OldskolFan who cares; 7billion people in the world, we need more death. The reality is that the value within our communities (which is now on a global scale) of each life is diminished by our over population. How many times have you heard of someone with a bachelor's flipping burgers. Look at the wikipedia entry for 'secretaries.' Most employers require a 4yr deg. Inflation of personal worth has ruined the world.

  • americans have that reputation...
