The final day of campaigning in Iran's presidential election saw the rival contenders on the streets of the capital.

Incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is fighting to hold on to power.

His supporters believe he's gained international respect for the Islamic republic.

[Zahra Elyaz,Ahmadinejad Supporter]: "He's done so much.  He's brought us to regional and world attention. When Obama, a man in such a position, respects Iran that is something Ahmadinejad is responsible for."

[Akram, Ahmadinejad Supporter]: "I'll vote for him 100 per cent because he isn't a thief and he isn't American.  He's always himself, he listens to me and he's a people person, he speaks for the nation."

In an increasingly bitter war of words Ahmadinejad is threatening to jail his rivals for insulting him.

He's accusing them of adopting the kind of smear tactics used by German dictator Adolf Hitler.

They accuse him of lying about the state of the economy in the grip of high inflation and falling oil reserves.

Two moderate challengers and a fellow conservative are fighting Ahmadinejad for the presidency.

Supporters of moderate rival Mirhossein Mousavi say it's time for a change.

[Tara Aghdashlou, Mousavi Supporter]: "I will vote for Mousavi because I think he's the most pragmatic candidate.  After four difficult years under Ahmadinejad's rule we need someone to take care of our foreign afairs and, more importantly, our internal issues."

[Unidentified Mousavi Supporter]: "We should all vote for Mousavi because he supports democracy and human rights."

The outcome of the election will have no effect on Iran's nuclear policy which is decided by the supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khameini.

But a moderate victory could at least usher in a less confrontational relationship with the West.
