The first FanWing OHS prototype was successfully flight-tested July 2010. This film shows the now modified FanWing experimental UAV twin-tail in its first test flight June 18, 2011. The OHS (Outboard Horizontal Stabilizer) twin-tail arrangement moves the horizontal tails from the strong downwash flow directly behind the wing to positions where they can exploit the upwash from the wingtip vortices. The new configuration follows two series of wind-tunnel tests. Onboard data logging shows improved efficiency, speed range, reduced drag and increased stability even at high angles of attack. The aircraft completed full circuits and a smooth landing despite weak tail booms and gusty winds.
