Fly Fishing Basics | Part 2

In part 1 of this short fly fishing basics series, Tim Gaunt-Baker talked about the synergy between the rod and the line; the meaning of the markings on the rod as well as the double taper and weight forward lines.

As a fly fishing beginner, the best line to start with is a weight forward line that matches your rod. Note, you must ensure you get a well balanced rod.

In this, part 2 of Fly Fishing Basics, Tim demonstrates both the correct way and the incorrect way of performing the roll cast and the overhead cast, the two building blocks of fly fishing.

  • Just brought some fly fishing gear today and thanks to your helpful tips i should be heading out tomorrow for a try :D

  • @ThePyroMusician That's great to hear! Look forward to hearing about your first fish caught on the fly ;)

  • I have watched this at least 6 times and have failed to see the "firm stop at 11 o'clock" in any of the roll cast instructions. Also, i have watched several of your videos, mainly of you chatting to some one off camera, but also a bloke you taught double haul to. All are like watching paint dry. Sorry but it needs saying. There is very little to learn here.

  • I'm sorry, Alan, that you have not found anything useful in my videos but thanks for subscribing to watch my future contributions.

  • Excellent video, one of the best for advising beginners like me :o)

Great bloke and easy to listen to and you make it all very clear and simple to understand, any tips for Northants resovoirs ?

  • Thanks for your kind words, Kaz 'n' BigG. Have you tried Eyebrook Trout Fishery not too far from Northants? It really is a great fishing location. I am now running courses there so look forward to seeing you there.

  • @ThePyroMusician how did you do? :), / cowpow2k

  • Fantastic to see a Leading expert in action and taking the time to show us. Looking at some of the comments I would suggest maybe they take up another sport like GOLF perhaps . Remember GOLF spelt backwards is FLOG and that's what the vast majority of these golfers do every weekend. FLOG a little white ball up a big green field....18 times....Just a thought....!
