FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN (1732-1809)

Concerto for two lire organizzates, two violins, two violas, cello, doublebass, and two horns in C major Hob VIIh :1

2. Andante

Performed by Ensemble Baroque de Limoges et Quator Masaiques
Featuring Matthias Loibner and Thierry Nouat, lire organizzate

* A lire organizzate can be most easily described as a combination of the hurdy-gurdy and the chamber organ. It was the favorite instrument of Ferdinand IV, King of Naples whom this concerto was written for.

  • Usually played (and recorded) by oboe and flute, since this is how Haydn rearranged his lire concerti and nocturnes once in London, how much better these pieces sound on the original instruments (aka organized hurdy-gurdies / vielles organisées)!

  • Yes, I think this piece has alot of character with the original instruments.

  • It has also been tried with tenor viol and alto recorder unison on each part (Frans Bruggen, Salzburger Festspiele, Mozarteum Orchestra, early 90's), whereby there were real intonation problems between the modern orchestra and the 'early' instruments. It is great that the intended instruments are now available and extremely well-played in this recording!
