your right.. you could make a mechanical device to do this continually.
essentially a drum with contacts on it. taking inputs from many trees. then combining them to a master capacitor and a battery. but how much energy would it take to turn the motor? some solar motors with a rubber band belt take little power.. but the amount of power from trees appears to be limited from my little experiments.
next time... i there is a next time i will make sure all the metal is the same .

Essentially if you find a good acidic plant, tape a few dozen of them and ground to earth you could then produce a voltage efficient enough to run LED lighting or low pressure fan powered circulation systems.
Best of all you could keep the plants alive and use them year round in the proper climate. Keep everything nice and moist with highly conductive well water and you could probably eliminate grid power completely from your home if you switched to LED's.
