Deer Commisson for Scotland Slaughter in Glenshee

What happens when you cross Red Deer in the Cairngorms, the Deer Commission for Scotland and tax payers money? Well quite frankly you get city people deciding on country issues, leading to the slaughter and desolation of one of Scotland's finest mammals and tourist attractions. I watched 10 shooters corner and kill over 40 hinds just off the A93 at Glenshee on this day. This was one of four pick-ups. Watch and see where your taxes went in January -- March in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Well guys thanks for adding your thoughts to this debate, if nothing else, Barbara's comments have opened my eyes to modern day "saints". I originally posted this video to highlight the heavy handed and indefensible practices of the Deer Commission for Scotland, NOT to suggest that the harvesting (culling if you will)of wild Scottish deer is a barbaric process, far from it. I just wonder if the "saint" is willing to tell us if she is a vegetarian or not....

It's funny that keeprs and stalkers "cull" but DCS, SNH and FCS "slaughter!

Caenlochan had far too many deer as did Mar.

How do you achive large culls without utilising out of season shooting and helicopters?

You can't , I have discussed this with many of the stalkers in the Glen Shee area and they agree.

I earn my money from deer and stalking but you have to be practicle , these culls are nothing to do with sport, they are a effective population reduction method.

A "slaughter" is a cull which removes hundreds of deer in one go, conducted over a short time scale. The by product of which is deer being chased day in day out for two months by helicopters and rifles. This results in high stress, failure to feed & misscarried calves. A classic example is Mar Lodge where this year hinds were stalked by day by the estate & shot with lamps at night by contractors. This is classic DCS / SNH-Rapid culls to meet yesterdays targets at the expense of deer welfare.

A "cull" is the removal of a given number of deer, usually equal to that off the reproductive rate for deer. On most estates this is conducted in a traditional manner and has little impact on the well being herd.

deer numbers have to kept down, but is mass slaughter of the fittest deer along with the weak the answer? it seems a policy of the labour government. why?. well, they have opened up the countryside, stalking and estate management are no longer wanted, they want to make the Highlands into one big lesuire park. i am afraid that with the cairngorm national park, deer in any sizeable numbers will probably be a thing of the past soon.

Once the deer have gone like the grouse, the gamekeepers will be the next in line for firing. Then you are left with the said government run leisure park, where the most wild thing you will see in the hills is an unshaven hiker.

the many times i've been around the highlands and anywhere in scotland really, I am amazed how little deer I have seen, and yes I am looking. Its not like kangaroos in Australia which are in plague proportions in many parts and are starving. All these deer killers would have you believe culling is necessary, when its not, its all about men with small appendages and probably short/bald/ugly/impotent men that need a gun and to kill something with it to feel 'manly.' wankers

@saintbarbara You seem like an intelligent being, so why do you hinge your whole life around a mythical being? There is no proof and there has never been any proof of a being greater than us! It's unbelievable that so many people believe in something as farfetched as God and all his trappings? I am not in the slightest religious and I am very happy. @saintbarbara , Please try and look at this for the good of the deer, yes these slaughters are far from ethical, but these are the fault of the snh and dcs not managing numbers properly. If handled correctly deer numbers could be controled humanely by taking out the old and weak instead of letting them die of starvation during the harsh winter. One quick clean shot ! its got to be better than starvation. If god is real, why does he allow these slaughters to happen?

wow, 40 hinds? 10 shooters? back in the day a NZ pilot and shooter team would shoot upwards of 200 deer a day. A DAY. one team out of hundreds. go cry more.
