  • Many say she and Michelle Kwan were the best skaters that never won golds ( in the Olympics ).

  • A classic performance from a class act in figure skating. She never reached the heights she should have, due to the school figures; she never won a World's nor Olympic Gold- but she has never been forgotten by true fans of the sport. There has never been anyone like her!

God bless Janet Lynn, who forever changed the way we look at figure skating.

Her layback is sublime! Most women, to this day, do not do the layback properly.

Dorothy Hamils is probably the best: textbook perfect.

  • as far as homophobia, i don't know her stance, but i read her biography when i was a little girl -- it was published in the 1970's. she attributes her grace, style and constant smile inherent to her love of God. she skated for God. I believed the man she married is jewish. if there is bigotry to the gay community, i do not agree, however, it's her life and as far as i know she is a person of peace.

  • @ upstreamswimmer: No way is Kim Yu-na even in the same orbit as Janet Lynn! She is an icicle, a machine (and it seems an egomaniac as well.) Scott Hamilton aid in his book that people who didn't learn school figures don't know what skating is! They know what jumping is. FInally coaches are getting their students to do figures, if only to improve those dag-blasted jumps!!

  • Janet Lynn IS the best the world has had in figure skating >>no one skates as beautifully as she does.

  • @HattieLovesCattie Mirabel Vinson Owen, who won 9 Nationals, and 6 in pairs at Nationals, also never won Olympic Gold.

  • She is mesmerizing. No one interprets music as well as Janet. And this was long after her competitive days had ended!

  • @ja3399 Likewise it's really lovely to hear from someone like you who grew up during a time when some of the all-time best skaters were having their heyday.

I really don't care about the number of revolutions in a jump, it's the quality that makes it for me.

As for the layback spins, I don't believe anyone has ever superceded them. As much I I like Michelle Kwan, her layback was just awful. I too miss the old judging and standards of figure skating.

Those days are gone forever, sadly.

  • @silmalila Your comments reach to the heart of what Janet's skating was about. Janet had to do school figures; in those days there was no short program. About layback: Janet set the standard. Dorothy refined it, yet both styles stand out and shine as personal, separate, and exquisite. There has been no layback like this since their skating days. Glad to see some "old-timers" like me here on 'Tube. I despair of new judging; judges anonymity, and speed & activity equals medals....

  • Dorothy Hamill looked up to her. It's interesting to see the similarities in their skating.

  • @masinindy I have heard vaguely that she used to be a christian inspirational speaker... but nothing about her being outspoken regarding homosexuality specifically... what has she said? Are there any tapes of her speeches on YouTube? Or, texts available that spell out what she has been saying re homophobia?
