Northern Ireland stares into the abyss

The second deadly attack on Northern Ireland security forces in 48 hours has prompted warnings that the province is "staring into the abyss" of a return to violence, after over a decade of calm. The killing of a policeman shortly after the deaths of two British soldiers is threatening to plunge Northern Ireland back into the sectarian violence which wracked the province for 30 years.
