European Journal | Slovakia: Dispute over ethnic Hungarian Minority

Slovakia is home to a sizeable ethnic Hungarian community that is pushing for greater autonomy. The government in Bratislava opposes the initiative, which has put a strain on relations between Slovakia and neighbouring Hungary. Recently the government produced new geography textbooks for Hungarian schools in Slovakia, in which the Hungarian place names had been removed and replaced with Slovak equivalents. The decision provoked outrage within Slovakia's ethnic Hungarian community, with subsequent attempts by the government to defuse the situation proving to no avail. European Journal takes a closer look at the simmering ethnic tensions in Slovakia.

@lolcatish There were 1.4 hungayrians in Romania in 2002 according to the census; it is estimated that there are now 1.2 million in Romania. @DIHORY Firstly i was talking about Slovakia and im not British but Italian Hungarian, Second there are 2 million Hungarians in Western Romania that Erdely. Third there are still 15 Million Hungarians in the Carpathian bassen which over all still makes us the the Majoratie facing differnt Minoraties. Fourth Austria Hungary was multi cultural due to Germans Hungarians and Czecks. But Great Hungary own its was not. And this was 90 years, and you cant say 20 M Romanians cos Hungary had erdely.
