Q. What are those jumpers on the back of SATA 3.5" internal HDDs used for?

A. They are for factory use, enabling or disabling different technologies & reducing the speed of the HDD. Watch the video to find out more... http://www.Support3GM.com

  • so if i buy two sata oem hdd and i want one primary and one slave do i need jumpers because im getting a oem

  • sweeeeeeeeeeeet!!!!! to bad my board isn't up to par.

  • I'm not sure if I understand correctly. I have a WD SATA drive which is less than 6 months old. Motherboard is roughly same age. Are you saying that the jumper arbitrarily slows down my drive no matter what or that it senses whether the mobo is compatible and slows down only if necessary? In other words, if I remove the jumper, do I get a performance improvement as long as the motherboard is compatible with that speed?

  • i hated the jumper system so confuzing

  • its causes you maybe have a sata2 hdd and only a sata 1 controler on your motherboard "try a sata 1 hdd and see if that works :D"

  • Well, it was Windows XP SP2 so I'm guessing yes. In any case, I have never had any problems with SATA drives installing that OS.

  • I read "drivers" as "jumpers" and nearly fell out of my seat laughing.

  • Does the OS in question have SATA drivers? If not, you will have to provide them.

  • Hmm, a friend had a problem with a SATA drive. When he tried to install the OS the drive was not visible. I guess it was cause of the old motherboard not recognizing the drive.

  • Wait what, so all this time I have been building pc's and when I got the drive i just plugged it in as it was, and now you tell me my drives have been going slower than usual since I never removed the jumper?
