Houston Mayor Annise Parker delivered the Keynote address at the 2011 luncheon for "Breaking the Silence", a group dedicated to full inclusion in the United Methodist Church. The Texas Annual Conference is held over Memorial Day Weekend. Mayor Parker is the first elected openly gay mayor of a major US City. Mayor Parker and her domestic partner have been together since 1990, and have a foster son and two adopted daughters. It is worth noting that she was elected and is able to lead and serve one of the largest cities in the United States of America, raise a family in loving relationship w/ her partner, and participate in all other manner of rights afforded every citizen of our country; still, she would be unwelcome (and unable) to lead a United Methodist Church, and her "lifestyle" is marginalized and deemed "incompatible" with Christ, according to the UMC Book of Discipline.
