The deleted scene from 1983's movie 'Trading Places'
by Paramount Pictures -removed due to its length/value

It's the scene where Clarence Beeks (actor Paul Gleason
- died May 2006), steals the crop report

This had been placed between the sequences where
Eddie Murphy (Billy Ray Valentine) listens in secretly on his office line to the phone conversation between the Dukes and Beeks, then THIS scene - going into where Beeks carrys
the briefcase headed to board the train on New Year's Eve.

Many (at first) thought that this was edited out due to the
producers not properly obtaining the copyright permission
for using the 1950's movie 'Sunset Boulevard'

Some public/cable TV stations still air the film with this scene,
but it was never shown in the original theatrical release

  • I'm still surprised how JERRY -the guard,

    didn't even hear/notice those pills

    being put into his cup!

  • Part of me thinks that Landis may have only filmed this scene in order to appease a studio exec's demand for it:

Exec: "I think we need to see him get the briefcase."

Landis "I disagree. But if it'll please you guys, i'll do it".

It's so badly done (especially in comparison to the rest of the film), I wouldn't be surprised he filmed it like this in order to make sure it wouldn't get into the final cut!

    I may be wrong!

  • Man, what a drag that scene was. Thank god they pulled it. Not only was it boring, but it punched holes in the plot of the film. It also bugged me the way Jerry was served like an inch of coffee. Anyhow, that's why there's editing I suppose.

  • This isn't even a scene. It's 10 minutes of 2 characters watching another classic movie. He couldn't possibly ever have intended to use this. Then again, Landis has had many moments of idiocy, as well as many moments of brilliance.

  • @drlove1972 Are you sure? I saw it in theaters that summer and have no recollection seeing this scene. I thought this was added for television, to counter the cut scenes and pad the airtime.

  • Other commenters have already said it better....but yeah, this scene is boring and pointless, and needed to be cut. Most unforgivably, it spoils the Clarence Beeks mystique. Don't fuck with the Beekstique.

  • ...notice the Coke can...

  • I love both those films, but i'm glad too this was deleted the very last mintune.

  • good thing that was deleted

  • THE FILM ON THE TV WAS MORE INTERESTING LOL

  • @SmartGXL i guess that makes sense

  • Wow. This scene was so amateur. It smelled to high heaven. I smelled like SHIT!
