How do you know how much elastic to use? For example, if I want to scrunch 3 inches, how many inches of elastic? And do I pull on the elastic while I'm sewing?

My elastic band is about 1/4" wide so i just used a running stitch. But if the band is wider, id say go with the zigzag or another stitch that is a side-to-side motion...
