TheWimaxMan you took my breath away when I read your post. I used to listen to WHFS as well, and the DJs there broadened my musical horizons. I remember listening to Cerphe playing this song, along with stuff by Ry Cooder. Reading your post took me back to those days in the early to mid 70s. It was quite a radio station, wasn't it.

I saw Willie Nelson open for the Dead and I remember when he started playing Poncho and Lefty I was blown away because I loved Townes Van Zandt and never even knew Willie Nelson covered it. It's amazing that some people think of this as a Willie Nelson song. Anyway, Townes is the real deal, I just wish I could have seen him perform but I never heard of him until I heard Mike Johnson do a cover of 2nd Lovers Song in 1998 after he died.

Sat on a barstool next to Townes and I told him that "Pancho" could stand next to Dylan or Hank. He thanked me. He could be a gent or a REAL problem.

@badbob1946 Hey badbob, I wish I could of met this man. And my most admired people are" the mad ones, the ones who never yawn or say a common place thing... but burn burn burn like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars..." J. Kerouac, and that seems to be what Townes Van Zant did. So what did he do that was so bad? Just curious is all, and jealous that you met him!

The greatness of Townes was that he could touch where everybody else couldn't . My journy [Yea , that's how I call it] which means since I start listening to Townes , is the longest , the most complex , the most doubtful and the craziest journy I've ever had .
I recommend each and every one of you guys to try go through Townes Journy . It'll help you know about yourself better . It'll show you how profound music can be .

Thank you Townes , Thank you for just being .

WHFS in Bethesda played this and countless other songs on a regular basis. Weasel and Damian were the ones I remember the most. They were the only station in the area that played anything worth listening to on the radio. When the big corporation bought them out it was the handwriting on the wall for this kind of music. Townes RIP
