Diving with Truth Aquatics on the Vision on a trip organized by Eugene Skin Diver Supply, we had a neat encounter with Giant Black Sea Bass (Stereolepis gigas) at Sea Fan Grotto on Catalina Island. This large fish not only allowed several divers at once to observe it at relatively close range, it also followed us after we finished filming and swam off to explore other parts of this dive site. Giant Black Sea Bass are a protected species. Once abundant along the California coast, they suffered from overfishing. Large individuals can weigh up to 800 pounds. They are very fast when they want to be. This short video was a gift from the ocean on my 100th logged dive.
