"The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?", aka 'Super Space Fortress Macross", aka "Clash of the Bionoids". First off, this won't be any kind of series; unlike the material found in my "Chop-Sucky" videos, bad anime dubs usually elicit groans and grimaces from me instead of laughter. This video is a special case, for several reasons. This was THE film for me, still one of the greatest of its kind, the exact moment that I became a fan of Japanese animation, after seeing it for the first time in its native language on a bootleg tape, as a high school student in the mid-80s. Many years later I experienced the now-infamous Toho-commissioned English dub, first on the MORE infamous "Bionoids" edit, and then on the complete film, where I said to myself, "I didn't know those kung fu voices worked on animes too!" It's only been very recently that high-quality releases of the original film were made available for import (though I wish we had the option to switch between original credits and "Flashback footage" credits), and my current project of re-authoring the disc - in order to include fan subtitles and a recording of the Toho dub captured straight from my old VHS cassette - has led me to this upload. Now I know there are several showcases of this dub on Youtube already, and this is not to steal anyone else's thunder (in fact, please check out the channels of
kojima555 (now defunct; sorry)
and kidfenris

for Macross and many other genuinely funny examples of bad anime dubs). This is mostly to have all the good stuff in one place, to cover the hilarity missing in the other clips (how do you leave out "Major Focker"?), and while I was at it, since the "kung fu VAs" are well represented, to also give this collection my personal "Chop-Sucky" treatment. Please enjoy, and please check your Robotech vitriol at the door.

UPDATE: I've decided to offer the English audio as an .ac3 file compatible with the .mkv file of the fan-subtitled Macross DYRL film that's available through torrent. Download here:

  • Deliberately non-detailed update: audio available, check descrip.

  • I have this exact english dubbed version on SVHS bought back in the mid 90's from a comic convention in LA. Do you know if this version is available on DVD? and is enhanced?

  • AFAIK, the dub's not available anywhere but on tape. Whenever I get my re-authoring of this film done (the subs are the bottleneck right now), I may offer an ac3 of the English track, depending on how well it syncs up with the import DVDs out there.

  • right on, so u go from bad kung fu dubs to bad anime dubs. LoL!!! good times had by us all indeed. and i can actually agree with the aliens, i'm still confused about the female species itself. LoL!!!

  • Well, this was a special case as I said, so I'm not doing any more animes, although It's very tempting to gather Focker's lines from that fandub. :)

  • Wasn't this dub done in the Philippines?

  • Hong Kong, obviously when it was still a British territory.

  • I love that you put this up, man. Thanks, brutha. Just like some others on here, I have this same copy on VHS that I bought at a Star Trek Convention in 1994. It's not the best translation, but some of those voices are great, especially Minmay, and Major Focker's--the best! My old buddies still do the Zentradi 'Microhuman' imitation when we visit, haha.

  • @ejektro Where can I download this English version? Indeed the other English version of this are indeed horrible.

  • I actually enjoyed this dub very much. There voices sounded alot more natural and not like american dubs where they are making retarded childish voices.

  • The Zentradi who speaks at 01:19 sounds almost the same as Marik Yami from "Yu- Gi-Oh The Abridged Series".

  • To be completely fair, some of the acting in the original Japanese version wasn't exactly Oscar-worthy. It was certainly better than this, of course.

  • Haha this was so funny! Hey why was roy?

  • The Mayor?!? LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL.

  • @Kitsuneranger

You insult the Big Green Dub by comparing it to this horrible thing. Oh, that dub was bad, but it wasn't THIS bad.

  • Say what you like about Robotech; at least it was better-dubbed than this!
