Revenue from Angola's oil reserves should be aiding the country's development. But instead, it's being used as a slush fund for government corruption.

Deep in Luanda's sewers, a group of boys show us around their home. "I'm desperate for help," begs one. "I'm eating rubbish, surrounded by others who are sniffing glue." According to the latest calculations, 9% of the country's GDP is siphoned off. Even the US ambassador admits that oil revenues are not going to the Angolan people. Ordinary Angolans know they're being ripped off by their leaders. They're seething with resentment. In the Angolan enclave of Cabinda, this discontent has fuelled a separatist movement which has been fighting for years. With more and more Angolans asking awkward questions, there's a risk the country will collapse into anarchy again if the corruption problem isn't addressed.

  • why can we not mind our business and focus on our fucked up country?

    What about America?

  • @asas2jh: "Blacks can't rule themselves." I suppose that's what the westocentric imperialism for hundreds of years has been all about then? India, China, Israel, the US continue to plunder the continent. The crises in Rwanda was sparked by the white Belgians that convinced the people they were of two separate races, favoring one over the other as the 'superior' race, when there was no biological difference. But go ahead and 'justify' the imperial rape of Africa by your racism.

  • @NJRocks281 What you say is true for certain cities beneath the border like Ciudad Juárez or Tijuana, anyway you can't deny that there's a terrible crisis in Iraq at the moment!

  • well according to casualty stats it isn't mi amigo

  • You really think that?!?! hahahaha, i live in Mexico and my uncle works with Amnesty International and trust, situation in Iraq is way worse...!

  • war makes money just not for us

  • No, Sir. You are the one that came here with childish arguments. I know that Angola is south west

Tell me something. Why do people call Europe & North America, "the west"? Because Europe is "north". Why is New York "west coast", and California "east coast."

Should we all carry a compass?

Whats the latitude and longitude of Angola?

By do way, giving my comments thumb down wont help you

  • I totally agree with you, but when you have a corrupt government, don't bet on good things happening. I just don't get why Chevron (or whoever) should be forced to build roads/schools/sewers for the peeps next door, when its the Govt. duties.

Chevron leased the drilling rights. Its the Angolan Govt that's fucking their peeps, not my shareholder Granny.

I love it how I am a traitor. evil. whatever since I point out the corrupt regime.

If Chevron weren't there, Shell would and the all be same.

  • I think that since the oil comes from their land, they should be getting more money than the people who use it for their country's own benefit. That country has more economic problems than the U.S. and America should not take advantage of them.

  • we have african cowards in power.they think these whites will spare their futures by being puppet dogs.african leaders must look at what happened to saddam, noriega, surhato.

  • Don't recall any mexicans wounded knee or the trail of tears unless we were there selling oranges to Custer or pimping the cherokee's covered wagons with velour fringe and plastic Virgin Marys.

    Get some history lessons.
