Its has been 160 years since the beginning of the Phuket-Penang relationship which the Thai Peranakan Association and its counterpart from Penang celebrated in Phuket on Saturday September 20th, 2008.
The celebration drew large numbers of Phuket natives, who have Chinese origins, to join and display determination to keep alive the unique and charming historical value and culture of what is call Baba Peranakan, or families of mixed Chinese Thai or Malaysian.
The Vice President of Thai Peranakan Association, Pranee Sakulpipat, explained to us the meaning of the two words Baba and Peranakan:
On Saturday morning a symposium was arranged with valued guest speakers, who shared with their interested listeners including young locals in Phuket, the remarkable relationship between the two sister islands. One of the guest speakers was Khoo Salma Nasution, an author and researcher from Penang who pointed out that Penang and Phuket people are like cousins due to historical backgrounds of their resettling during the old tin mining era.
An interesting exhibition on the historical back ground, clothing, culture and people to remember were put on display for younger generations and participants to learn.
In the evening, the participants, especially ladies, dressed beautifully in Yaya style to celebrate the special occasion under the theme Baba Peranakan By Night.
Not only clothing, but also Phuket and Penang delicacies with Chinese noodles and varieties of sauce were highlighted among other items. There were about 22 food booths displayed and serving food.
A Chef from the Chef Association in Penang also demonstrated some of Penang recipes.
The participants also enjoyed cultural dance shows performed by Satree Phuket School
Entertaining the Phuket and Penang brothers and sisters was one of the oldest bands in Phuket called The Sharks led by Khun Narong Hongyok and friends.
The celebration for the 160 years of relations between Penang & Phuket was enjoyed in a friendly and happy way with the Thai delegation planning to go visit Malacca & Penang for an annual convention in December, when Penang proudly hosts the event as it also celebrates its World Heritage listing as well.
