Speaking of Charlie Chan & Bela Lugosi, it would be great if someone could actually find the earliest, lost Charlie Chan films, as well as the lost/cut
footage of Bela as the Frankenstein monster, speaking at the beginning of "Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman".
Lots of good stuff vanishes into unknown film vaults or ends up on the cutting room floor, sadly.

Actually, I meant that Bela doesn't speak until Frankenstein's monster is re-introduced, at least 1/2 hour or so into the movie, after the Wolfman's storyline has been laid out. Well, it's a moot point since the footage has never shown up, if indeed it still exists at all. I think that someone has actually published the original script with scene details, however.

A big problem with all film before 1950 was the fact it was shot on nitrate base film
stock. Over time, it would shrink and couldn't be printed onto positive stock. Ultimately it would turn to nitrate base powder which was very nustable and extremely flamable. The smoke from the fire would get into people's lungs and mix with the moisture in the lungs and turn into nitric acid -- really dangerous
stuff and no cure if you inhaled it. That is why old movie theatres had fire shutters.

Chan at his finest! Thanks for posting this great footage.

This was not a son of Charlie Chan. The character's name was Kashimo, a bumbling assistant assigned to Mr. Chan by the HPD. He is only seen in this movie, "The Black Camel." Also, refering to a comment below, sorry, but Chan's offspring were never portrayed as "idiots." He was assisted throughout the years of the series (1931-1949) by a number of sons and even daughters!

dwight frye is so dashing as jessop. :) would think he would have made a wonderful james bond.

I don't believe that this "idiot" is one of his sons, he's never referred to as such, and Chan always treats his sons (and the occasional daughter) with love, concern, and wry (sarcastic) guidance when necessary.

I love the end of this clip, when Dwight looks a bit anxious and says: "Do you have to do all this?"
That reminds me of Jeeves! :D

Bela Lugosi and Dwight Frye were also in Dracula. I wonder which movie was made first?

Dracula was made first in late 1930. The Black Camel was made a few months later.
