The film is about making video games, but at its core, it's about the creative process, and exposing yourself through your work.

Well they are portrayed as the creators of generic indie neo-retro platformers. I don't see how they could be viewed as anything other than losers, at least in the game development field

These games will most likely be generic 2.5D trash with a retarded secret hidden meaning, like everybody has seen a million times and nobody will actually care for.
You can tell because the developers here are healthy young men with nerdy glasses, when most experienced developers are Fat bearded middle aged men with fedora's.
