Once upon a time, I had this magnificent album. This song was played on the jazz station a lot. It was in California and the DJ usually played three songs a set. He played this between Herbie Mann's "Memphis Underground" and Tom Waits "Emotional Weather Report". Hey, it was one of those nights.
Love both versions...nobody quite like these two legendary ladies and nothing like them in concert!!! Luckily in LA got to have this wondrous experience many times...Bravo to Esther & Etta!~
You're right on all counts. I'm a super Esther fan, but on this song I have to give thumbs up to Etta's version. I have a friend in Detroit who's like Uh uh, nope it's Esther's song (O: What ever, both of them know how to sing it.
This is a cover of Esther's friend Etta James classic. Both are done well. Esther and Etta share much in common, both were child stars who survived drug addiction and whim of public taste.
Both are great. I am a super fan of both. Does anybody have Esther's "To Lay Down Beside You?" If so, play it and post it.
