How often do you leave your shower running waiting for the water to warm up? We all can't help but do that since it may take a few minutes for the hot water to get to the tap, especially in the winter. An average family will actually lose 20 gallons a day waiting for hot water. Green enthusiasts cringe at the thought of all that unused water down the drain, and even the not so green shower taker can't help but feel somewhat bad about having wasted that water because after all, our parents taught us to be conservationalists. Also, on a purely comfort level, don't you just hate the fact that you have to wait there for the hot water?

So what can you do both increase your comfort as well as decrease the amount of wasted water? Well, there are a few solutions. You could just not shower or shower once a month, but then no one would want to associate with you. (You may laugh, but there really are such people.) You could invest in an instant hot water heater, which both saves on energy as well as heats your water up much faster, hence much less water down the drain. Or you could install a Metlund Hot Water D'MAND System by ACT D'MAND, a new product we just found out about at this year's West Coast Green.

The Metlund Hot Water D'MAND System is an electronic pumping system that brings hot water from the water heater to the faucet in a matter of seconds. It is a retrofit that uses the already existing piping in your home. It's really simple to use - All you need to do is press a small button or use a wireless remote to activate the movement of the hot water.
There's even the option of a motion sensor that turns the system on when you walk by. Once hot water reaches the pump, the system detects a 3° to 4° temperature rise and completely shuts off so there is no loss of energy or water.

You can save about $300 a year in both water and energy costs by using this technology. The installation takes less than one hour, and is so simple that a plumber is not required.

A newer product that ACT D'MAND just recently released is an expansion tank. This tank addresses the issues surrounding the pressure that builds up in water heaters. The expansion tank serves as a bladder where this pressure can go. This expansion tank is different from others in two ways: it uses a flow through which allows self-cleansing to prevent clogging, a common problem with expansion tanks, and it eliminates the cold water sandwich effect common in tankless gas water heaters.

Expansion tanks are so critical that California is now requiring all newly constructed homes to have expansion tanks because of the build-up of pressure in the home.
