Windows 7 is very slow at certain file operations. This is one example where file size enumeration of several files takes a long time. In Windows XP, it does this automatically and nearly instantly in every folder it opens. In Windows 7, you have to click "Show more details..." and it takes quite a while. Please try it yourself, navigate to a folder with many files and select them all, see how long it takes.

I don't know what Microsoft did to slow it down, but it might be their policy to slow things down one way or another so people have to buy a new computer with each iteration of Windows. That would make one more sale to microsoft for each new computer, and less piracy. I have other examples of nasty bloat from Microsoft, here is one

Even with an SSD and a four times as fast CPU and memory, it takes about 40 seconds longer for a similar operation. There are twice as many files in the windows 7 system32 folder, but it takes 40 times as much time to enumerate the file sizes.

I have another computer that dual-boots between XP and 7, and launching the same applications that reside on a D partition takes twice as long in 7, and the harddrive seeking noise sounds much less active.
