I like the folks who think an animal is rare or far between just because they never see one. Last time I checked the Cougar was not on the ISL. If the animal or any animal for that matter, becomes a nuisance, I have no problems killing it. It is rather easy to tell when you have a problem animal. There are other options though.
I see them quite a bit actually. Problem is if you see them, they already know you are there. Western Okla is loaded with them. OKWD was alleged to have released them years back to control the deer population due to hunters only looking for racks. They can be a problem at times. Eventually I look for Oklahoma to eventually have a season for them. As far as kids being harmed, I have seen no reports. But I have heard of the occasional Poodle coming up missing.
Not as odd as you might think. There are big cats in Carter County too. One recently ran off with a womans pomeranian. I've seen sign myself. I carry a weapon, even when just hiking. We have wolves too, thanks to some hybrid escapees from irresponsible breeders. Near Gene Autry, there is a fellow with a dozen or more tigers, and a grizzly bear. I sure hope he counts them daily. lol. I heard he feeds them live cattle.

If you've never seen this cat before, I'm pretty sure your kids are safe.
PLEASE don't kill it. They are too few and far between.
