Sex and violence... is that all video games are about? Well, if you listen to Gov. Lincoln Chafee, yeah. But while many of the most popular games, from the Call of Duty series, to Halo, to Gears of War, Max Payne (and the list goes on) are incredibly violent, there are countless other examples of massive games that eschew violence either fully or almost entirely, like Minecraft, Portal, the Sims, etc. What does the Common Room crew think? Watch and find out!

Do you agree with John that games are about more than just blood and sex? Or do you think Lincoln Chafee is right, and games tend to focus almost entirely on gore? Is this changing over time? Do you prefer games with violence or ones like Minecraft that focus more on creativity? Let us know what you think in the comments down below!

We'd like to thank Samantha Schacher, Chelsea Klikunas, and Alex Sanborn for joining us!

I find it very difficult to believe the blonde lady was still in school while Mortal Kombat was out.

There's a video of Samantha Schacher where she imitates macho behaviour and graps on her boobs. Can you tell me the the address?

The reason that most people wouldn't like having abortions, assisted suicides etc in video games is because they are ACTUAL realistic things that take place and are issues in real life. We don't like reliving, fantasize or play something that feels to real for uss. We don't like to play something that feels like it could actually happen in real life. Violent games provide uss with something unrealistic for the world we live in.

UFC is the problem? Wow. Yeah because the Columbine perpetrators, the Virginia Tech shooter, the Colorado movie theater incident, Oklahoma City, and the thousands of people that shoot other people every year, are all MMA guys. Somebody tell this chick to go back to the store and ask for the rest of her shirt.

I agree with you. The 3rd ingredient is the feeling of getting things done and achieving goals. This happens much quicker that real life but it's still very satisfying. Also video game 'goals' are so much more daring and important. Without this 'getting stuff accomplished' aspect, the violence & sex in the context of a video game would become dull & repetitive.

I honestly believe that it's a good thing there are violent games, because if there weren't, then a lot of kids/adults wouldn't have a way to vent their aggression and they could easily go out and take it out on some innocent victim. Because for at least me and all my friends, we take our aggression out with video games. Because let's say we're playing my favourite game, Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess, we're taking our aggression out on the bad guys and saving the innocent people
