Muscles at rest burn 5 calories per pound, fat burns 2 calories per pound. Adding muscle mass is VERY difficult to do this. Thinking that your body has a way to burn calories more easily is silly and that it's just a silly notion. You cannot increase your metabolic rate.
@AlbertaBeefy I should correct myself, exercise increases your total metabolic expenditure for the day, but not your rate.

It's crazy to think it's EASY to increase the metabolic rate... sure, you can increase it marginally by adding muscle.
I think exercise is the surest way - it quite obviously increases your metabolic rate.
It is, however, easy to decrease the metabolic rate - any diet too low in calories will do that... I see people trying 500kcal / day ... they're starving. Heck, at 1200 kcal/ day they're starving.
Keep you metabolic rate decent by eating enough, and burn via exercise and low-carb. My 2c
