Dragonscale Chainmail, maille without joins.
The 3D printed model in SLS nylon can be bought direct from Shapeways; http://www.shapeways.com/model/196069/

This is a sampler patch of a chainmail weave called Dragonscale. I designed it in 3d CAD software and Shapeways printed using their Selective Laser Sintering technology. As a result of being printed, the rings that make up the chainmail have no joins!

3D printing is used in the industry of Rapd Prototyping but I prefer creating unusual items.

  • I am wondering how strong this is.. I am thinking about making a packpack or bag with it and wonder how much it would weigh per square inch and how much weight it may be able to safely support.

  • @upcycle

Hi, thanks for your interest. I've added a couple of links to the description that might shed some light on the material and process, Cheers :)

  • Very cool. And you are a cool dad for helping your daughter with her project.

  • @mickmizzou

    Thank you!

  • What is it made of?

  • @goodfellow1984

It is made of nylon by a selective laser sintering process.

  • Next: 3D printed armour, on shapeways get it in metal, it would be freaking awesome :D

  • @SoyBoySigh - I haven't tested it yet, but it should be pretty strong being a flexible nylon material, not that it matters as this was a test piece I had printed just to find our 'if it could be done' - dunno about the rest, I just design stuff - Thanks for your comment :)

  • stab it with a knife to test it.
