  • The NIAAA’s 2001–2002 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC), which surveyed 43,000 Americans, indicated that 75% of those who attained long-term sobriety after alcohol dependence did it without treatment of any kind or attending any kind of support group. Ruminate on that: 75%. No AA, no treatment at all.

  • @joedigits Solutions? Well, if he didn't have to be sought out for the most part but pushed by AA/NA members who work in addiction therapy, rehab centers, recommending 12 wacky steps, etc. then perhaps you'd know his solutions. How many kids learn about zen buddhism in midwestern public schools from the Young Lifers screaming "UNDER GOD!!" at the flagpole every morning before school? There's your answer. Critical thinking, there's 1 solution for you, joe.

    Addiction is a complex phenomena - encompassing social, cultural, psychological, emotional, existential, economic, historical and discursive dimensions. Too complex for you?

    BTW: "Temperance" means the nineteenth century Puritan Christian orthodoxy that dictated moral norms.
