@loppisfynd padholder? I think it is more to be understood as a kind of trainer, who provokes Yod to aim for certain areas to attack with hit and blows. Then Yod can be free to respond only, be reactive, that is the essence in muay thai, beeing reactive. This is partly why the start slow and let the energy build up, to be relased later in the fight. Pay attention to how a fight/game allways start slow and ends very fast in Thailand. Westerners start faster and end slower, more uncoordinated.

ive trained in that gym at the same time he was training and his kicks are even more imperssive when u see them in person.
