Climate change is considered one of the greatest threats to coral reefs. Increasing sea temperatures cause mortality of corals through a process known as 'coral bleaching'. Because of coral bleaching, coral reefs are highly endangered ecosystems. However, they can recover from bleaching events, and this is known as resilience. This video forms part of an IUCN-CCCR/CORDIO/IYOR series exploring coral bleaching and resilience to bleaching.
Video 1 explains the bleaching phenomenon and describes the causes and effects of bleaching. It includes an interview with Dr David Obura, Chair of IUCN-CCCR and CORDIO Director.
