Annette Hanshaw (October 18, 1901 - March 13, 1985) was one of the first great female jazz singers. In the late 1920s she ranked alongside Ethel Waters, Bessie Smith and the Boswell Sisters.

Her singing style was relaxed and suited the new jazz-influenced pop music of the late 1920s. Although she had a low opinion of her own singing, she continues to have fans because of how she combined the voice of an ingenue with the spirit of a flapper.

  • Beautiful. Lovely to hear this song as a waltz as written.

Annette Hanshaw has such a pure voice, perfect for this touching song.

Thank you for posting this great music.

  • @joe22twentytoo well if you mean death, than she died on the thirteenth or march, 1985 (as the description says) and died of cancer . if you mean her singing career, then she stopped singing in 1934 and settled into a married life with her husband. and i can't blame you for falling in love with her. her voice is really quite beautiful and so is her looks. thank you for your time.

  • info is copied directly from the wiki page.

    fail.

    But great song, love Annette.

  • The song is credited to Irving Berlin along with the lyrics.l have seen the original 78 with just him on the credits.A few people do also mention Loehner as lyricist. The song has ended is about his wife's sudden death in 1912,and although released in 1927 was though to have been penned sometime before.Berlin's immediate tribute was When l lost you

  • "When I Lost You" was the song Berlin wrote for his late wife who died in 1912 from typhoid fever six months after they wed. Beda Loehner wrote the lyrics for "The Song is Ended."

  • Great comment David.Thanks.I just found Annette this morning and I am blown away. She was fantaSTIC!

    Wade

  • I agree: they are very different types of singers, but both at the top of their game.

  • Thank you, DG3, for the inside scoop on this song. The song is even more bittersweet now.
