A Smart Grid for Intelligent Energy Use:

The Smart Grid involves the use of communications and computing technology to transmit and distribute energy more efficiently. This video describes the smart grid and how it will reduce our carbon footprint through energy efficiency and the integration of renewable sources of energy.

Featuring interviews recorded at the IEEE Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles: Accelerating Innovation Conference (2007) and the IEEE Energy 2030 Conference (2008).

Produced by IEEE and ScienCentral, Inc., with funding from IEEE Power & Energy Society, IEEE-USA, and the IEEE New Technology Directions Committee (NTDC).

Critics of solar, wind and other "alternative" electricity and champions of "the grid" overlook the fact that it is possible to build a modern building, whether that is a home, apartment or office building, with the proper amount of solar, wind and additional power generation and storage capacity based on how much wind or sunshine, peak demand, etc, to be fully self-sufficient, even in the most extreme locations or usage demands.

It probably adds between 20 to 35 % to construction costs.

When your energy source is coal, you build a big electricity plant near a coal mine. When your source is oil, you build it near a port, refinery or oil field.

If your energy source is the sun, wind or even natural gas, you can build the exact sized generator needed for that building, right where that building is, often as part of the building's architecture and construction costs.

No need for a grid, moving forward, if all new construction included solar, wind, natural gas generators, etc etc.

I think a more fundamental question should be asked, first.

Why do we need to continue following the centralized control model of energy distribution when most new energy generation technology better serves a distributed, decentralized, point-of-source energy production and use model?

A grid can still serve high-demand and high-load industrial users, but most homes and offices can currently generate their own power via several technologies, right at the point of use.

I agree with you... there is a free energy source - the Torus. Harnessing this source of energy will be a real problem for the energy companies (et.al.). The effect would be a global economic collapse of those heavily relying on current energy sources... Lookup power of the Torus in Google.
