FLYIN'
Copyright 2009 by Shas Cho

Special thanks to David Hanners (dhanners23)
for his very generous advice and encouragement.

This song is dedicated to my dear friend Laurel,
who solved her midlife crisis by buying a Harley.

In fact, it was intended to be a song about her bike,
which says something about how much control
a writer has over his pen.

Am Dm C E7

I wake up to the sunrise
flaming crimson on her spokes.
Dew drops jewel her fenders
through the haze of my first smoke
Bitter coffee scalds my throat
as I adjust the chain
I swing aboard
and now the centaur roars to life again

This mountain air's the best champagne,
the pine trees smell like gin
I leave my cares on the Great Divide
and let the wind blow away my sin
Lean forward, twist the throttle,
bow my head to the breeze
Flyin' low above the highway
with my spirit soaring free
Flyin'!

That motorhome's holdin' up traffic
he's got 30 cars in a line
At the first straight stretch I let her go
And leave all the fools behind
When the climbin' sun gets hot enough
I pull off for a brew
I sit and think of all the miles
that stretch from here to you

Flyin'
It's a long and lonely road
and it's all I've ever known
I've travelled every highway
but I've never made it home.

I wave back to a lonely boy
pumpin' gas at a Texaco
Thinkin' back when I was him
and how I couldn't wait to go
When I started flyin' solo
it's a shame I never knew...
Dreams come true when you're not lookin'
All I'm lookin' for is you

Thunder down into the canyon
with the shadows growin' long
--- Sweepin' through the curves
beside the river all alone
Flyin' out into the open valley
I catch another gear
These tears are just reflections
of the sunset in my mirror

Flyin'
It's a long and lonely road
but it's all I've ever known
I've travelled every highway
and I've never made it home.

  • What a cool song and backstory, Shas. Is there any crisis, midlife or other, that cannot be ameliorated, at the very least, byt the introduction of a Hog in to the equation?
