I meant to explain what Ubuntu is for those who don't know what it is in the video, but I forgot about it, so I'll explain it here:

If you don't know what Ubuntu is, that's fine. I think I first learned about it last year maybe. But chances are you have at least heard the word "Linux" floating around. Linux is a free Operating System that you can use to run your computer. So if you don't like Windows, and the Mac is too much for you, maybe check out Linux. But Linux is a completely open source software, meaning anyone can both modify it and post their mods to the web for download. There are things called "Linux Distros", which are basciclaly Operating Systems that use Linux as their core. Think of it as basically an Android phone, but the Android OS has a skin on it to achieve a look and feel desired by the phone manufacturer. That's basically what Ubuntu is. It's an Operating System based off of Linux. If you want to check it out, grab a DVD and a DVD burner and go to http://ubuntu.com.

So in this video, I attempt to run Ubuntu on my iMac for the second time. I wanted too see if it would maybe be easier on my iMac, which does have hardware issues at the moment, so that's why I tried this. Did it work? Watch and find out!

  • My brodda when u have a mac u wanna boot ubuntu? Its like downgrading .. The only practical use of ubuntu is the freewares, but when it comes to daily work its just not connected enough to make everyday chore a breeze

  • @sp1ic3sp1ic3 well yeah but still I wanted to see it happen

  • Most Kids dont get it because they think they know everything when they dont know anything. Ubuntu or Linux is anything but a downgrade. I dropped windows and propreitary sw in 1991. Running terminal allows you to do much more especially since everything is open-source. If you refer to ubuntu as "freewares," lol you obviously don't know linux very well. Linux runs on the fastest machines etc. its even on phones now and is preferred for servers.

  • @sp1ic3sp1ic3 Hahahahaha down grade..... right!!! Which rock did you crawl out from under and how much do you really know about crapple.???

  • try gentoo or debian. i cant wait till i get ubuntu sorry if i post alot lol im posting while i watch

  • did you burn the CD with a mac or a PC.... cuz it only works on a mac if you burned it on mac if i understand correctly. read the documentation its really worth it and Ubuntu is actually extremely versatile and easy to use... make sure you did it all right because you should know what you are dong when changing your OS...

  • If you want to see what Linux is like in a "raw" kind of state, you should try a minimal distribution like Arch Linux, which comes with nothing except a command line and a (software-)package management system. To use a distro like that in everyday life, you need to install all the graphical stuff, codecs etc by yourself. Won't be any fun if you're not into technical stuff though, because you need to actually understand how your system works.. which takes time, nerves and a computer-loving geek.

  • To try and answer your question: Linux itself is only a kernel (like what Darwin is for Mac OS X). The complete operating system (including a command line and the graphical user interface i.e. most of what you see and click on your screen) is made up of the kernel + a huge lot of other software components, which are provided by the distribution.

  • @Pizzscn "Well, yeah,"? Ubuntu is a great OS. Ofcourse, not everyone has the same tastes, but to outright say it's unfit for work is stupid. Especially since they include office software with the initial instillation.

  • Anyways good video should work on any computer with limited compiling these days.
