Ira Krakow's Yafaray Blender 2.49 Tutorial

YafaRay is an external renderer (download it from www.yafaray.org) that is integrated with Blender 2.49 via Python scripts. You can add many dramatic features, such as global illumination, caustics, enhanced ray tracing, and self illuminated objects, to your renders, with YafaRay. YafaRay extends Blender's built in renderer with special types of lighting, new material options, and enhanced world settings. It's not intuitive how to run YafaRay to get these features. YafaRay works with the settings you set up in Blender, ignores some of them, and adds other features. The goal of this tutorial is to show you an efficient workflow of Blender and YafaRay. I can't cover all of the features in a short video. Hopefully, there will be enough for you to get started and to explore more on your own. There's no substitute for practice. I am assuming that you have installed YafaRay correctly to work with Blender 2.49b.

@theadamgaskins It took me a while to figure it out. I haven't seen the type of basic how to start using YafaRay with Blender, which is why I decided to do this.

is yafaray faster than the default renderer?

@ThomasWilliamSweet That depends on what you're doing. It's more like Yafaray gives you features not found in Blender internal, like caustics, photon mapping, and path tracing. And the ray tracing isn't the same either. So it's like comparing apples to oranges.

I'm just now getting into external renderers but not yafaray, at least not in a awhile, I just started playing with luxrender and renderman... I like luxrender best so far.

@SavageDogg38 It appears that the tight integration between 2.49 and Yafaray is going away in 2.5. The new External Render of Choice is Povray. Is Yafaray going to be enhanced, or is it on the way out?

Hey, i have the same problem as kurentmalik,

when i get on blender and open yafaray 0.1.1 in the scripts window... i get an error in the console that says,

ImportError: No module named platform

i tried looking around so many places and fourms but i cant find how to fix this..

im trying to get this to work on blender 2.49b which has python 2.6 in it.

any suggestions?

Hey, i have a problem. when i click Render animation in yafaray, it only saves a lot of PNG pictures. I want an avi file but i cant find any option for changing file type. Please help me.

@irakrakow Hi, I have a problem. When click on yafaray it says this: Python scrip error: check console. Pleas help me I dont know how to fix this. I have tried re-installing python2.7, blender 2.49 and yafary wich is 01.1. And the problem still goes. What should I do. Thnx

@irakrakow Yafaray's 2.5 export script is currently in development. There's few threads on blenderartists and the yafaray site, so google the threads if you wanna follow them. There's an unofficial export out right now, and it doesn't look bad.
