I have developed a hypothesis on the nature, cause and mechanics of sleep. I would appreciate helpful input.

  • "Also sleep deprivation causing death is a myth." That's untrue. There are multiple conditions in humans that cause severe insomnia and inevitably lead to death. Fatal Familial Insomnia for example, always leads to death. The insomnia at first leads to paranoia and hallucinations (just like you see in tweekers who stay up for weeks on end.) They eventually become unresponsive and die. When mice are forced to stay awake they die after a few weeks.

  • @LogicStance

Yes I found that out after I made the video, though the people that have died from sleep deprivation were all people who previously needed sleep so doesn't address my hypothesis only changes the degree of effect people who require sleep suffer when deprived. My hypothesis allows for detrimental effects of not achieving sleep in those who require it, that doesn't discount the lack of need for those who have no drive for it.

  • also, dolphin and birds don't prove or deny the idea, it could well be that it was evolutionnary simpler to just get the brain to sleep in shift rather than undo all the adaptation to sleep.

  • maybe your theory contributed to developing "sleep" since our fish-like ancestor, but we've been evolving with it ever since, so it's likely other things evolved to work only in association with sleep. it could very well be that other theories are true a well, even if your idea was true.

your best bet would be to find just one person who can not-sleep and live for extanded period of time (other than rumors), doesn't have to be human, any mamals would do.

  • every time I watch one of your videos it blows my mind, I need to think more :p

  • @FlyingFree333 Your link didn't work--maybe just message me the website.

  • @CrazySatanicInfidel

Sorry link only half worked, click the "The brain during a dream." link then go to item #4.

Item 4 EEG readings during REM sleep.

Also above that they talk about denying subjects REM sleep while allowing all other forms of sleep and they suffer sleep deprivation effects, showing that REM sleep is the only form of sleep that satisfies the need for sleep. Whatever neurochemicals being released here cancel the urge for sleep. They also mentioned subjects that didn't suffer from REM deprivation.

  • @FlyingFree333 Um, yeah, but the point is I want you to point me to your sources of information so that I can draw my own conclusions, rather than learning from you secondhand, you know? I thought wake and sleep states were different, so where does it say that they are the same? My credibility will be either established, repealed, or left uncertain only after I see some data.

  • @CrazySatanicInfidel

REM sleep and being awake are identical on an EEG, only the falling asleep and waking up states differ. REM sleep satisfies the craving for sleep, no other form does to the best of my knowledge. And as far as finding me credible, feel free not to, you'd hardly be the first.
