http://dsc.discovery.com/tech Aircraft bird strikes are on the rise; two Canada geese brought down Flight 1549 into the Hudson recently. And the Smithsonian's Feather Identification Lab - BSI for short - is on the case. Kasey-Dee Gardner investigates the three ways the lab IDs thousands of feathers, and why they're so important to improving airport safety.

  • Im sorry, im not really good at english.. im german

  • The Smithsonian Bird Lab, by its own admission, can't positively identify any bird species without DNA extracted from properly collected and preserved blood sample. No blood was recovered from AWE1549, therefore no ID could've been made. This Discovery Channel segment is made-for-TV fraud, as is the alleged Canada Geese feather recovered from the left engine with five other fragments. No feather would ever survive such a physical pounding in that remarkably good condition.

  • quieter engines and faster!!!! really!!??? is that what has happened to airplanes? give me a break! many planes are pushing 15-20 yrs,,,,, oh,, that's right, we have more birds now,,, jeeesh
