In Douglas County Omaha Nebraska, WIC offices provide peer breastfeeding mentors for new and expecting moms. The mentors are themselves WIC mothers with breastfeeding knowledge and experience who serve as strong community advocates for breastfeeding. Their message is that breastfeeding gives babies a healthy start and provides many benefits to moms, too. The duration of breastfeeding among WIC mothers has increased by five weeks thanks to this program. The program is a partnership between the Douglas County Health Department -WIC, Alegent Creighton and Catholic Health Initiatives.
