The Divine Liturgy is the common term for the Eucharistic service of the Byzantine tradition of Christian liturgy. As such, it is used in the Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and Eastern Catholic Churches. Armenian Christians, both of the Armenian Apostolic Church and of the Armenian Catholic Church, use the same term. But the Oriental Orthodox usually employ the term "holy offering" (qurbono qadisho in Syriac, surb badarak in Armenian) for their Eucharistic liturgies. The term is sometimes applied also to Latin Rite Eucharistic liturgies, though the term Mass is more commonly used there.

  • Sorry but for now i've only two videos about this holy place...maybe in my next trip :)

  • who is that guy you zoomed up on?

  • A Greek Orthodox Patriarch...i don't know him.

  • @Sheti

I think he is not a Patriarch, just a Bishop...

  • @Loiginer True, is a Bishop

  • everything is different... sory my friend but the catholic liturgies are dry as a rock. No offence, I suggest you visit mount Athos to feel from near a trully spiritual liturgie.

    much love from Cyprus

  • All our Liturgies are ornate. They're a little more so when a Bishop is present, etc...and Holy Week services are beyond ornate, but they are all loaded with processions, censings, chants etc...someone else will have to help you with the specific differences between our liturgies, but the biggest one would be length (typical would be 80 minutes)

  • yep, we RC gave up the beauty of the pre-1962 rite for the Novo Ordo, and while I prefer our hymns, I LOVE going to my local Ruthenian Parish for a taste of the East. Why we couldn't have kept the structure of pre-1962 and updated the Lectionary and Sacramentary with new prayers is beyond me....and don't get me started on the destruction of our artistic heritage in buildings and art :(

  • @BalletBoy007

The New Order of the Mass was intentionally made to be more like a Protestant service.

  • The Liturgy is intended to be as beautiful as it is possible to make it as it is an earthly offering to our heavenly Father.

  • Its funny now that I've come back to this comment because I've noticed that the Orthodox Liturgy is closer to that of of the Roman Catholic Tridentine Mass (the Latin Mass) than the Orthodox Liturgy and the Novus Ordo Liturgy. Both the Orthodox and Tridentine Liturgies still have that same sense of beauty, mystery, and awe, that the current Catholic liturgy has lost. Thats why I now attend the traditional Mass of the Roman Catholic Church now. Thanks for the comments! Pax Christi!

  • Actually, yeah, you should go to an Orthodox service to experiance it for yourself. It is better that way...

  • All of our litergies are "Ornate". The services for special occasions are the same in that sence, the hymns and chants and things like that are different. But yeah, every service is like that. There are lots of differences between the Catholic and Orthodox christian services. For one, ours is 2 hours long gerenally, and we use no instruments except perhaps an organ sometimes in some churches. We sing Occapello. You should look it up and read more about it cuz I can't explain it all well here...

  • I am Catholic and I go to the Melkite Divine Liturgy but I love the Orthodox. I hope there will be union one day soon. God bless.

  • I visited when I was a Catholic. Very spiritual experience.
