With all the talk about tuning, it's important to remember that in Bottesini's time, a lot of cats were playing three stringed basses, which would lower the tension considerably.
@HandyTheXxxX For most string instruments this is the case, but because bass strings are such a high tension, trying to tune them up a whole tone can often have disastrous results, such as pressure cracks in the top of the bass (as a long term symptom) and broken strings (as a short term symptom). This is why companies that produce strings all have an orchestral tension and a solo tension, one to be tuned GDAE, one to be tuned AEBF#.
@Colimaniac The piece is actually in D, but it's written for Solo tuning (one full step higher AEBF# high to low) so there is an accompaniment in C for those of us too cheap (or a poor university student like myself) to afford solo tuning strings can play it reading the same sheet music, as Solo tuning bass reads as if it is a transposing instrument (reads G, plays G, sounds at A).

@eerbrev Solo tuning simply means to tune the strings a whole tone higher, no special strings required.
