Klein e considerato un dei più importanti artisti internazionali del dopoguerra, fu la figura principale del Nouveau Rèalisme, il filone francese del movimento americano New Dada, il cui fine era unarte di diretta espressività altamente provocatoria. I suoi lavori includono dipinti deliberatamente bruciati e la serie di antropometrie, corpi di modelle colorate con il famoso blu e trascinate sulla tela per lasciare un impronta sotto la direzione di Klein.
