Most of the old temples in South India (if its your first time in India start with Goa please!)have an elephant for leading processions and 'blessing people'. Its usually an old female because they're easier to control (and cheaper to feed and house). The best kept one I saw was in Karnataka in village temple at Hampi. This one is in a temple in Pondicherry. At first I thought it was cool then I looked down and saw the chains onthe poor thing's feet. She just has to keep standing in the sun all day 'blessing' people. Should've given her something to eat instead of money. The money just goes to the jerks sitting on her...
When i was there there was no guy sittin on top! Lakshmi, oh lakshmi
