BERLIN '36 tells the story of an extraordinary friendship in a difficult time. While the Nazis hoped that the two rivals would battle one another, they had the courage to become friends.
Berlin, 1936. The U.S. threatens to boycott the Olympic games because of Hitler's racial policies. They insist that Nazi Germany allow Jews on their team, and specifically demand the participation of Jewish high jumper Gretel Bergmann (Karoline Herfurth), the leading high jumper of her time. The Nazis reluctantly decide to include her, but to make sure she doesn't win a gold medal, they send in a rival, the unknown Marie Ketteler (1) (Sebastian Urzendowsky). Their coach, a rabid Nazi, uses every means in the book to undermine Gretel's preparations. Yet she consistently outscores her other competitors, including Marie. Two weeks before the games, Gretel is barred from participating; the Nazis' goal to eliminate the team's Jewish competitor, yet still win a gold medal, seems within reach. But Gretel and Marie have forged a strong friendship during their training. It is now up to Marie to decide on whose side she really is... Based on a true story.
BERLIN ´36 is based on the true story of the Jewish high jumper Gretel Bergmann, who was seen as the favorite for the gold medal at the 1936 Berlin Summer Olympics. In order to prevent Bergmann's possible victory, the Nazis sent in Marie Ketteler1 -- in reality a man -- as her rival.
Director Kaspar Heidelbach ("A Light in Dark Places," "Der Untergang der Pamir") has crafted a moving drama based on the true story of Gretel Bergmann, which also tells the story of the friendship between the two opponents, who remain loyal to each other despite the NSDAP's reprisals.
In the lead roles are Karoline Herfurth (ONE YEAR AGO IN WINTER, THE READER, PERFUME -- THE STORY OF A MURDERER) as Gretel Bergmann and Sebastian Urzendowsky (2008 Academy Award winning THE COUNTERFEITERS, A WOMAN IN BERLIN, THE DAY WILL COME) as Marie Ketteler. Starring alongside are Axel Prahl (THE RED BARON, THE PIANIST, WILLENBROCK) as Trainer Hans Waldmann, and August Zirner (THE COUNTERFEITERS, SPEER AND HITLER -- THE DEVIL'S ARCHITECT, VOYAGER, MOSTLY MARTHA) as Gretel's father.

This is just an example of the shameful, evil and limitless actions of the nazis policies trying to prove to the rest of the world all the power of the ¨aryan race¨ during the olympic games 1936 jajajajajaja!!!. I just feel so sorry for Marie Ketteler, who was forced to live as a woman, locked in a misery life until he was arrested drunk and finally everything was discovered and exposed. Too much for the aryan race I guess jajajajaja...

A shame how they twisted reality a bit, but I guess that's the way with movies it has to be a bit dramatic.

The Germans won EVERY category of events, with the execption of track and field, won by the Americans. NEVER before or since has a single county so dominated the Oylmpics as Germany did in 1936.

This is a brilliant film but many people won't be able to see it as it's not got English subtitles. A real shame!

That girl with the dark hair looks like a boy. Not very aryan looking, either.

I just saw this last night. Fantastic film! Besides a great true story, great acting and casting, it really shows the "banality of evil" that preceded the horrors of the Holocaust. Evil that came from the top down in the form of Nazi policies of exclusion, and everyday meanness that was encouraged by such policies. It is a movie for our times. THIS FILM HAS A DISTRIBUTOR IN THE U.S. BUT NEEDS A THEATER IN NEW YORK CITY -- CAN ANYONE HELP?

''undermine their talk of a superior aryan race''
i'm no believer in the aryan race and its supremacy but germany won 2/3 of all the medals and if anything proved it
