Some clips from Kyokushin-kan shinken Shobu competitions.
Shinken Shobu is a rule format designed by the kyokushi kan faction of kyokushin karate to reflect kyokushin sparring as it looked before the knockdown rules (which banns fist &elbow strikes to the face aswell as all holding and grabbing the opponent) was invented in the early 60ies.
Shinken shobu is basically knockdown rules, but allows hand and elbow strikes to the head. It allows clinch, throws and limited time ground-grappling after a throw (tryng to get a pinhold or strangulation). But scoring, timing and so on is identical to the normal knockdown karate rules.
It is run in limited entry tournaments. Limited as in limited fighters are allowed in each weightclass. Large number fighter tournaments, as knockdown where over 500 fighters have competed in a single weightclass, is a bad idea for Shinken Shobu for health reasons.

The competition format is fairly new, and neither fighters or referees are very good at it yet. But they are improving.
At the moment it is only used by the Kyokushin-kan organization in Japan, where it is run side by side with normal knockdown rule tournaments. Plans are in motion to spread the competition format on a international level.

  • What kyokushin org is this, iko matsui, sosai etc...?

  • It is the "Kyokushin-kan" organization, founded and headed by Hatsuo Royama. They broke away from IKO1(Matsui) in 2002.

  • im kyokushin kan karateka and i cant wait till it ger here to the US..... ct,

  • Wide swings, low guard, this stuff looks like low-level slugfests. Hopefully they will learn from their relatively more mature and experienced mma counterparts.

  • @odjrin Not a big surprise considering that traditionally punches to the head aren't allowed in Kyokushin tournaments.

  • Assem.Osu

  • Wow, almost nobody was defending their head.

  • @2:04 Those guys were fucking HUGE.

  • @Angel7black

Rules of fights determine style of fight. Contemplate this.

  • @nonaCbarC seems alot more boring watching to guys punching and kicking each others bodies with zero defense and just trying to prove who's tougher. only reason why there knocking each other out so fast is because they have horrible defense right now and there each just throwing haymakers as fast as they can. they'll get better eventually.

When punching the head is allowed, ppl tend to distance each other further, cause they are afraid of getting punched in the head. Also ppl tend to through less kicks, cause fights become faster pace. So, you see less knock out by kicks.
