Dr. William Lewis is founding director of the McKinsey Global Institute and author of the book The Power of Productivity. In this interview, hosted by Luis Figueroa, Dr. Lewis explains that consumer-oriented societies and those that fundamentally protect individual rights have been the most successful in achieving high levels of economic development and reducing poverty. He explains that poverty could be reduced significantly if poor countries adopted free market policies, enhanced productivity, and became more competitive. Despite the current financial crisis, he believes that Western economic philosophy is not in peril, explaining that from a historical perspective today's economic problems will have only short-term effects.
