The Island group that make up French Polynesia were not officially united until the establishment of the French protectorate in 1889.
The Polynesians were granted the French citizenship in 1946.

The most beautiful islands that I have visited in my life, very expensive but worthwhile.
The person who made the previous comment is completely confused Air Rarotonga has many flights to French polynesia I took one myself, anyhow many trouble makers on youtube.
