even the marine top general krulak tried convinicing westy that we need to help the farmer, krulak in the early stages from 63to 66was agreeing w/westy then general krulak saw the light &ended up butting heads time after time w/westy that attrition is not &will not work and krulak wanted to use his marines to move in &work w/the people but was ordered by westy to find&kill the enemy or krulak would be replaced.westy had his mind made up &that was w/fire power which made more enemies.
i had the upmost respect for westmoreland untill my studies revealed his tunnle vision on this war that cost america &the vietnamese civilian millions of wasted lives.from 1962 a senior american advisior by the name john vann had brought this to the attention to westy that his war of attrition is going to be a huge mistake &a big part of the reason why the south will fall.instead of trying 2 help the farmer hes blowing up the farmer.in which will make more (vc)
@sirstrong1st I must disagree with you - General Westmoreland was a fine and decent general who fought the war to the best of his abilities, and by 1967 he had the commies well and truly on the back foot, even thought Kennedy and later Johnson - with MacNamara and their "Best and Brightest" - had forced him to fight the war with his hands tied behind his back.
Westmoreland was not incompetent, the President(s) and their stupid "limited war" nonsense was incompetent.
He wasn't necessarily incompetent, he was just a fundamentalist, unwilling to listen to beliefs or facts that did not match his preconceived notions. He was a flawed character.
