As part of the Northwest Institute for Social Change, we spent an afternoon interviewing people in the King Neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. This area is undergoing gentrification as young, naive families move into what used to be hard core gang territory and price out the poorer residents and renters. The members of the program split into four groups and each investigated one of the following categories: 1. businesses who had been there pre 2000
2. businesses that had moved in post 2000
3. residents who had lived in the area pre 2000
4. residents who had lived in the area post 2000

This audio piece is what we found interviewing the fourth category of people.

  • This is an interesting project. Did you make a recording of the category 3 perspective? I want to compare the two.
